The UK is now halfway to meeting its ‘net-zero emissions’ target

Sustainable Framlingham

The global climate is undergoing significant changes due to human activities, and all countries are committed to taking measures to prevent temperatures increasing to unsustainable levels.

We can see the evidence now in more frequent and severe weather events such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall, hurricanes, drought and wildfires all over the world.

The Average global temperature has increased by approximately 1.2°C over the past century.

A clear view of this is visualised in this colourful Warming Stripes graph. Each strip shows the average annual temperature in the UK between 1850 to 2023, and it is clearly still getting hotter, faster every year.

How much time have we got?

UK Climate Change Committee says the Government must plan to reduce UK household emissions by 2030 from 8.1 tons to 4.5 tons of CO2 annually (including imports, exports and aviation).

And by 2050 the country should have reduced emissions to Net Zero.

It is clear that everyone needs to make changes to their lifestyles to help reduce the use of fossil fuels, and to become more resilient to the effect of climate change by increasing sustainable activities.

This includes us in Suffolk – all who live and work here.

Net zero can be achieved through a combination of emission reduction and emission removal to achieve a neutral balance. It means reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activity and implementing methods of absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.

At Greener Fram volunteers are developing projects for Framlingham – collective action is the most effective way to work towards the net zero target.

What are the Issues?

We need to be more informed. The first thing we need to do is to find out how big an issue this is in our town and in our own households.

Framlingham’s total household emissions average at 15.9 tons of CO2 annually.

You can use a Carbon Footprint Calculator to see this. There are now many different ones online. Here are three – the first one below shows how Framlingham Town/Ward rates as a whole (and any other area town city), and the other two are personal calculators.

We all need to explore ideas on what we can do, and what actions would personally be the most achievable.
