Emissions Reduction and Resilience
Who is doing What?
List of the main local East Suffolk initiatives with county wide plans to reduce emissions
East Suffolk Council (ESC) is actively working to reduce carbon emissions through various initiatives:
They have published Environmental Guidance on key environmental issues relating to the building industry.
Their Environment Task Group has published its work since 2019 online
Greenprint Forum is the East Suffolk Council’s body rolling out climate change initiatives and information on local projects in this region. You can see their activities and sign up to their monthly newsletter here:
Suffolk Observatory If you want to research Suffolk data in more depth the best place to go is the Suffolk Observatory. Here is a link for their Climate Emergency Dashboard:
Framlingham Town Council have set up a special working group of residents and local stakeholders representing Suffolk organisations to research and establish what were the causes and effects of the Storm Babet flooding and how to make the Town more resilient by coordinating agencies and holding them to account if necessary. The group meets monthly and publishes news and reports on the Framlingham website.
Personal Carbon Footprints
What can we do to reduce our own carbon emissions?
The first thing would be to assess our own personal Carbon Footprints.
We have already done a lot in various ways for some time now – such as changing to LED lightbulbs, recycling waste, lowering laundry temperature, or even reducing meat consumption.
So how far have we got? Try using a Carbon Footprint Calculator to see your own progress towards lower carbon emissions – there are now many online.
With a few household bills on hand you can calculate your personal household Carbon Footprint – two good sites:
This includes very comprehensive set of calculations, but you don’t need to complete every category to get a Carbon Footprint calculation. Also you can insert different figures to see how much a difference it makes to your footprint. In this way you can see what changes you might take to your lifestyle which would be the most effective.
This is a much simpler form to fill in – great for an instant overview of your carbon footprint, and easy for children to do too. The results will be more approximate, including some generalisations based on the average consumer.
Reducing Houshold Energy Use
Creating Warmer, Greener Homes
Trusted advice on energy efficiency
The Energy Saving Trust offers detailed practical advice on a wide range of energy efficiency and clean energy solutions, helping millions of householders every year to make better energy choices.
How to reduce your energy bills
The UK Power Network has produced guidance on how to reduce your energy bills and get a warmer greener home. It helps you set up a Green Home Plan.
Insulating Your Home
Properly insulating homes is a key step in reducing carbon emissions and achieving energy efficiency.
Households struggling with fuel poverty should take advantage of government funding available to low-income and vulnerable households to improve their insulation at no cost. This not only lowers energy bills but also ensures a warmer home. You can check your eligibility for the government scheme at Great British Insulation, which covers insulation costs.
Thermal Imaging Assessment
Greener Fram is working with GreenSuffolk to roll out a Keep the Heat thermal imaging project to allow households in Framlingham to assess their properties for heat loss – where it is, and how bad it is. Contact us if you would like to include your property in this survey.
Solar Panels
Centre for Sustainable Energy has a calculator on installing Solar Panels. It also has advice on battery storage.
Heat Pumps
There has been a lot of talk about the pros and cons of heat pumps. The Centre for Sustainable Energy has a Q/A page on heat pumps – how do they work? And is your your home suitable?
